A more efficient, competitive and sustainable livestock sector
Animal production is a key activity in guaranteeing adequate access for people to the protein necessary to cover their nutritional needs. Within animal production, the pig and poultry sectors are of paramount importance, having a high representation within the livestock sector, accounting for about 1% of the total Spanish GDP and employing more than 700,000 workers.
Despite its relevance, this sector faces multiple challenges and constraints. The control of greenhouse gas, nitrate and phosphorous emissions, the need to restrict the use of antibiotics and the improvement of animal welfare are challenges that the sector must inevitably face in order to guarantee the sustainability of production in an ethical and responsible way. This all involves improving overall animal health and developing new technologies, methods and practices to make the sector more efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly.
